![]() – (Leader 22nd.) A man who was present in the dance hall in West Las Animas on the evening when the Allison brothers killed the constable one day last week, says the Allison's were both drunk, going around the hall and trying to provoke a fight. Coroner Reedy summoned a jury and held an inquest this morning. His death is a painful blow to the community, and it is needless to say that considerable excitement prevails today. His manner toward prisoners was gentle and kind. Charles Faber was an excellent officer, gentlemanly, discreet and brave. They were here a little over a year ago, when they made threats of running the town, and used their pistols rather promiscuously. They are from Cimarron, New Mexico, and are notorious as defilers of the law. But for one of them being wounded the probability is they would have made good their escape. The Allison brothers were arrested by Sheriff Spiers at the Vandiver House a short time after the shooting. Clay Allison went out on the steps and fired at them when they fled. When the constable entered the hall to make arrest he had two or three assistants with him, but it appears they were of no service to him, for they fled into the street at the first shot. And again, just as the wounded man was about to be removed to the hotel, his brother tapped the corpse on the head, called his attention to it saying: "John, there's the d-d sob that shot you, and I killed him." It appears that a short time before Faber had demanded their arms and they had defied him to arrest them. ![]() An eye witness informs us that after the shooting, while John Allison was lying on a pallet, his brother dragged the body of Faber up near him and said "John, here's the man that shot you look at this G-d d-d s-n of a b-h I killed him!". After Faber fell the Allison's continued to fire at his lifeless body. He was armed with a shot gun which he discharged about the same time, and from which John Allison received slight wounds. Last night about twelve o'clock, or a few minutes later (railroad time) Constable Charles Faber, in attempting to disarm John and Clay Allison, at the Olympic dance hall, was fired upon by both of them and fell at the first shot. While songs on earlier (and later) P5 albums often sound like sample collages moreso than conventionally-assembled pop music, the sole representation of that particular style to be found on Bossa Nova sticks out like a sore thumb – the incessant repetition of “ Sophisticated Catchy” may live up to the second half of its title, but the suggestion of sophistication seems more like a bitterly ironic joke than anything else. Relying less on sampled instrumentation than previous releases, Bossa Nova 2001‘s clean pop sound allowed it to spawn the group’s biggest hit in “Sweet Soul Revue” (embedded above), and Maki Nomiya’s vocals had never sounded brighter than on its 16 sparkling tracks. The difference that the addition of Oyamada to the production lineup made to the final product is hardly a case of night and day, but it certainly allowed for Bossa Nova to represent a step up in production quality from previous P5 releases. Previous Pizzicato Five releases had all been produced by the band’s rotating cast of players (which included, at one time, Original Love frontman Takao Tajima), but on Bossa Nova the group took their flirtation with Oyamada – who had previously been featured in the “ Tout va bien” promo clip - all the way to home plate. Although the origins of the style we now know as Shibuya-kei can be traced back to the late 1980s (with acts like Original Love and the first incarnation of Pizzicato Five serving as the prototype), it is worth considering that the actual phrase itself wasn’t coined until the early ’90s – and that, despite Flipper’s Guitar being considered as the first Shibuya-kei group by many, the duo of Kenji Ozawa and Keigo Oyamada had already broken up before people were even calling their music “Shibuya-kei.” In this sense, Pizzicato Five’s Bossa Nova 2001, released in 1993, represents one of the earliest essential examples of Shibuya-kei as a musical movement with a name and defined ideology – and, as such, no attempt at forming a Shibuya-kei canon would be complete without it.Īlthough he would later come into his own as a solo artist, in the early ’90s Keigo “Cornelius” Oyamada was most content to work his magic behind the scenes, lending his talents as a producer to pop releases from Kyoko Koizumi and his then-girlfriend Kahimi Karie, but his most famous production work from this period came with his contribution to the elder Shibuya-kei group Pizzicato Five’s Bossa Nova 2001. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a general rule of thumb, most seeds should be planted at a depth of 3 to 4 times their own width. Larger seeds like sunflowers and beans need to be sown several centimetres beneath the surface. Very small seeds such as begonia and lettuce only need a light covering of sieved compost or vermiculite. If no instructions are provided, the size of the seed gives a good indicator of how deep to sow it. Check the seed packet before you bury your seeds beneath the soil – if they need plenty of light to germinate they’ll only require a thin dusting of compost or vermiculite to get them underway. The amount of light that the seed receives is determined by how deeply it’s sown. ![]() Some seeds need light to germinate, and some don’t. On wet soils this will improve drainage and air circulation, while on dry soils organic matter acts as a sponge, holding water in the soil for longer. ![]() Both can be improved by adding plenty of organic matter such as well rotted manure or homemade compost. Outdoors: Wet, poorly drained soils or dry, sandy soils can be difficult environments for seed germination. Remove the glass or plastic as soon as the seeds begin to germinate to prevent the seedlings from rotting. If the soil surface begins to dry out, simply stand the seed tray in water until the surface becomes moist - but be sure to let it drain again. After sowing you can cover the seed tray with a sheet of glass or clear plastic to retain moisture - the compost should remain damp for several days or more. Ensure that seeds are kept evenly moist by thoroughly wetting and draining the compost before you begin. Help early sowings along by using cloches to warm the soil. In the north it may be necessary to sow a month later than the seed packet suggests if the soil remains cold. Seed packets usually advise when to sow direct outside but this will vary between warm southern gardens and cold northern locations. Outdoors: Keep an eye on the weather and avoid sowing if the soil is cold and wet, as this will cause the seed to rot. Once germinated, you can move your seed trays to a slightly cooler position. Most species can be sown successfully indoors at temperatures between 13C - 21C – easily achieved in a heated propagator or on a bright windowsill. Extremes of heat or cold may prevent seeds from germinating so it’s well worth monitoring the soil temperature with a soil thermometer. It was too hot or too cold:Īlways check the recommended germination temperature on the seed packet. Some seeds, such as parsnip, lose their viability rapidly so it’s worth buying a new packet each year. Seed that’s beyond this date will often still germinate but the success rate is reduced.
